Be a Registered Nurse – New Graduate Apprentice with the Float Pool at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau, WI!

Aspirus’ New Graduate RN Apprentice program is for those new RN graduates who are unsure which patient population they wish to serve as they begin their nursing career.

In this position, nurses have the opportunity to work in multiple areas that support new graduate nurses. Individuals can be hired into the Medical/Surgical track or the Critical Care Development Path. The programs are as follows:


Med/Surg New Graduate Apprentice Program

Units included: Medical and Adolescent/Pediatrics (MAP), Post-Surgical Care (PSCU), and Oncology Care (OCU)

First Rotation:

  • 6 weeks of orientation, 12 weeks on own

Second Rotation: 

  • 1 week of orientation, 11 weeks on own

Third rotation: 

  • 1 week of orientation, 11 weeks on own


Critical Care Development Path

Units included: Cardiac Telemetry (CTU) and Medical/Surgical Intermediate Care (MSIMC)

First rotation:

  • 8 weeks of orientation, 12 weeks on own

Second rotation:

  • 1-2 weeks of orientation, 12 weeks on own

Individuals will return to CTU or IMC for approximately one year and would then be eligible to transfer to an ICU or the ED if a position is available and the individual is seen as ready for such a position.

 

Throughout the program, individuals in leadership will complete check-ins frequently with the new graduate nurse. At any time, if the nurse finds their preferred unit, we will work to obtain a permanent position for them, and they will then “graduate” from the program. Aspirus believes in giving you the best foundation possible to start off your nursing career and we are motivated to place individuals into a unit in which they will be most successful. As a new nurse at Aspirus, you will learn the following key responsibilities: 

  • Identifies opportunities to improve patient experience. Participates in projects/programs designed to enhance service delivery and patient satisfaction. 
  • Collects data using established assessment format.
  • Assesses emotional needs and learning readiness to develop holistic plan of care.
  • Conducts and documents total nursing assessment of the health status of patients by collecting and recording subjective and objective data.
  • Plans for care through the existing episode of illness onto the next level of care to promote continuity of quality care and optimal outcome.
  • Defines and alters protocols/procedures to meet the care needs of individual patients.

Qualifications:

  • This program is offered to external employees only.
  • Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from a previous clinical instructor.
  • Must possess knowledge of patient care standards and practices normally acquired through completion of a nursing program.
  • Current CPR certification or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Possesses an active Wisconsin RN nursing license.
