Managing bed capacity is essential to the smooth running of a hospital since all departments are in some way dependent on bed availability. Determining the optimal number of hospital beds is a complex and challenging endeavor and requires models and techniques which are sensitive to the multi-level, uncertain, and dynamic variables involved

Every decision made in a hospital has an impact on bed availability and in turn, patient flow.

Planning is the forecasting and organizing the activities required to achieve the desired goals.

Bed management involves constantly monitoring hospital admissions, discharges, and patient movement within the hospital so that accurate information is gathered to identify bed availability across all units. Awareness and impact of system regional trends affects the forecasting and decision making related to acceptance of transfers.
